Dr. Dodson:In your book, Sex for One, you talk about having to do Kegel Exercises for incontinence. Is it necessary to have a dildo in the vagina? My instructions state that you should tighten the muscles around the sphincter but not tighten the buttocks, upper thighs, etc. Your book made me feel better about my vulva's appearance. I too thought my wattle was ugly and extended due to masturbation. To give you an example of how poor my education is, I thought the wattle WAS my clitoris. I also enjoyed your artwork and hope you'll have more published. Thanks! Linda

It's always great to hear from another woman who's learned to appreciate the beauty of her vulva. At some point, I'd love to publish a book of my art, which would include more of my vulva art.
As for your question about pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises, they can really improve the quality of our orgasms as well as insure urinary control. Through working with many thousands of women over the last 30 years, it has become abundantly clear to me that a strong pelvic floor muscle enhances orgasm with oneself and during partnersex. I recommend these exercises for every women.
Here are the instructions:
- Locate your pelvic muscles by stopping the flow of urine midstream. Once you have located them, allow the urine to flow freely to completely empty the bladder.
- Note: In trying to identify the PC muscle, women sometimes make the mistake of tightening all of the surrounding muscles -- in their stomachs, thighs, and buttocks. This is OK for exercising the whole lower body but not helpful in isolating just the pc.
- To exercise the pc muscle, try to keep everything relaxed except the pc. LIFT UP. Do not bear down. Contract the pelvic floor muscles tightly for a moment and then release them, ten times in a row. Rest with a deep breath and repeat the contractions. Gradually increase the number of contractions and do them several times a day or as often as possible.
- Exercise this muscle while watching T.V, talking on the phone, at each stoplight when you are driving or riding, or while doing the dishes--find your own individual pattern.
- Vary the exercise by holding the contraction longer before releasing the muscle. You can add a rhythm by doing some short and some long contractions. Just do it. Especially use the pelvic floor muscle when masturbating or having intercourse to increase the sexual pleasure for you and your partner.
Enhancing PC Exercises with a Dildo:
Using a suitable small dildo inside your vagina while squeezing and releasing the muscle is believed by most sex educators to help the strengthening process . My own experience testing various types of dildos as exercisers confirmed that conclusion convincingly. However the dildo or resistance device can't be too big or else the muscle becomes crowded and there isn't enough room to contract it. So the resistance device shouldn't be bigger than approximately two fingers.
Using all of my information, gathered by testing vaginal exercisers with clients over the years, I developed my own design, which other sex educators confirmed was highly effective. Betty Dodson's Vaginal Barbell is now available from www.bettydodson.com and adult sex stores (both online and in actual stores). Betty's Vaginal Barbell is both a practical vaginal exerciser and an excellent pleasure device that I have used for years in teaching women about orgasm. Made of stainless steel, with a mirror finish, the Barbell is 6 & ¾ inches long and weighs nearly one pound. Once inserted, the weight holds it in place.
Conclusion:
The more you can isolate the pelvic floor muscle and tighten it, the more benefit you will receive. Many of us use our stomach, buttock and leg muscles in the beginning. But after more practice, the ability to focus on just the pelvic floor improves. Remember, the best way to find the pc is to stop and start the flow of urine midstream, and it has been proven a strong pelvic floor muscle enhances orgasm not only with oneself but also while having partnersex.
Happy squeezing and releasing your PC muscle for better orgasms.
