"Betty Dodson has created a fascinating, beautifully erotic work that is filled with sensitive, thoughtful information and insights." Penthouse magazine
Review by Sharon Peters Based on Dodson's self-published 1974 classic, Liberating
Masturbation, and first published in 1986, Sex For One has
been a steady seller over the last decade as its message
reverberates among increasing numbers of women and men who through
it have learned to take responsibility of sexual satisfaction into
their own hands. It's fundamental point - indeed, Dodson's fundamental point - is
that culturally we're all wet about masturbation, as well as most
sex. Even otherwise reasonable people on the subject of selflove,
those who acknowledge that it's not a physically debilitating "solitary
vice", rarely champion masturbation as a personal and social
value. It's just too hard for most of us to drop into normal
conversation a line like, "Oh, sure, I beat off all the time."
Not for Betty Dodson. In the faces of centuries of cultural
momentum, she came to appreciate the liberating value of selflove,
and a generation and a half ago stood up to proclaim loudly that
masturbation is good for you. As a result she has endured a lifetime
of abusive name-calling and worse. But to her undying credit, Dodson
has been strong and wise enough to absorb all the hate, fear and
general nonsense on the subject and turn it into positive energy.
More than any other single person, Betty Dodson has been responsible
for reshaping our cultural thinking on the subject. This book, so highly personal in its approach, is a document of
Dodson's strength, growth, understanding and unfailing good humor. I
personally think this is an absolutely essential book, required
reading for an adequate education in human sexuality. Even if you
think of yourself as an expert on the subject, you'll learn things
you didn't know about the safest sex. And you'll get a clear insight
into the psyche of one of this century's most intrepid explorers of
the self.

"It's safe to say that Betty Dodson is responsible for inspiring more
women to take sexual pleasure into their own hands than any other force on
earth. Sex for One has changed the lives of millions."
--Susie Bright, author of Susie Bright's Sexual Reality, Editor

"Sex for One proves once again that Betty Dodson is a
pioneering and outstanding authority on masturbation. Read this remarkably
honest and liberating book!" --Albert Ellis, Ph.D., author A New
Guide to Rational Living
"After reading Sex for One, I can honestly brag about
my sex life without exaggeration." --Harvey Fierstein, author of
Torch Song Trilogy
"Sex for One by Dr. Betty Dodson is still just about the only good book around dedicated to masturbation. This is more of a cross between a personal narrative and an impassioned defense of the subject, but there is still plenty here in the way of excellent advice. It's also great reading in its own right. --Girl's Guide to Getting Off Alone, by the Mouth Organ Editors, maximag.com archived November 9, 1997
Short Takes from Readers
Dear Ms. Dodson:
Your book has profoundly affected the lives of at least two dozen
women I know personally who have read it this last year. They range
from my 19 year old daughter, other 50 year old peers, to gutsy ladies
of 72 who have handled the surprise, delight and rage your insights
have triggered. The debates have been great. I've actually had the
courage to confront my physician, ask questions, and in turn have seen
him make positive changes. All very rewarding.
Dearest Betty Dodson,
About a year ago, a friend sent me your book, Sex for One. It changed my life and my feelings about myself. Even though I live alone, I was still hiding under the sheets or in the bathroom when I masturbated. Your book, along with encouragement from my friend showed me that self-pleasuring is OK! Off came the sheets, and out came the mirrors.
Hi Betty:
You are a beautiful beautiful person and your book should
be required reading for everyone. Will we ever see this? Is there
hope? In these days of AIDs and STDs you should be honored as a
life-saving angel, a national hero My wife and I love you. Keep up the
good work. You can and do make a difference. Thank you for opening our
eyes.
Dear Betty:
I have just finished reading your Sex for One
for the second time, and I have been sharing it with special friends.
It is nothing short of a masterpiece! You are to be highly commended
for your open mindedness and your refreshing, progressive attitude.
Dear Dr. Dodson,
I just finished Sex for One, and I feel totally empowered! I've never thought of my cunt as beautiful; instead, I thought it was deformed by excessive masturbation as you did. Now I'm beginning to view myself as beautiful and not as a slut or as a chronic masturbator. I'm starting a new campaign of feeling good about myself, and, thus, I hope to gain confidence in my sexual self and learn to enjoy my sexuality more than I already do.
Dear Betty:
Congratulations and thank you for your excellent book,
Sex for One. What an inspired, moving, funny, stimulating,
heartfelt book. How I wish I'd had it when I was an adolescent. As a
social worker and psychotherapist, I know I will use it to help many
of my clients. I'm planning on give it as a Christmas gift to my
family.
Dear Dr. Dodson:
I read your book, Sex for One, and it's of course
excellent. I have degrees in education and psychology and many years
experience working with young people, mostly boys. I've studied
sexology for decades and never read a book that so forthrightly
discusses the benefits and joys of masturbation. Very well done!
Dear Betty:
I can't tell you how pleased I was to discover your
beautiful, liberating book, Sex for One. I think masturbation
is one of the most pleasurable experience on earth. Although I have
never had any real hang-ups or problems with masturbation, it was
still great to have your book to confirm all my feelings. Let me thank
you for writing such a wonderful, poetic, loving book about
masturbation. If more people in the world "loved themselves"
more, in every sense of the term, I think a good deal of the earth's
problems would be solved. Masturbation is freedom. Masturbation is
joy. Masturbation is contentment.
Dear Ms. Dodson:
I purchased your book Sex for One for my wife and
myself. We both read it and it has greatly enhanced our enjoyment of
each other. Thank you very much for your honesty and hard work, it was
a joy to hear someone speak in such an uninhibited manner of a subject
that is mostly neglected in all sex education materials. If more
people would avail themselves of this information and act upon it we
would live in a happier and better adjusted society.
Dear Dr. Dodson:
Thank you very much for writing Sex for One. Your
style lends itself beautifully to your subject matter, and I believe
anyone reading your book will not only be rewarded with new
information about themselves, but more importantly, will be compelled
to challenge some of the poisonous antisexual propaganda our culture
insists on instilling on the young.
Dear Betty Dodson,
Your book, Sex for One, got passed around my
office. The women were turned on to how beautiful the female genitals
are, and the men were enlightened about how greatly women differ from
one another. The images of your cunt portraits still linger in my mind
and dreams. I feel more sexual for having seen them. Many people must
love you.
Dear Betty Dodson,
I'm all turned on to your idea that sexual liberation is
one of the major keys to women's liberation. Please send me fifteen
copies of Sex for One. I want to give your book as a gift to
my three younger sisters, my mother, my sister-in-law, and four of my
friends, five women at work and myself, since I had to borrow a
friend's copy to read it. I'm having fantastic orgasms. Thanks.
Dear Betty:
After reading Sex for One I experienced my first
ever guilt free orgasm masturbating. My method since I was four (I am
19 now) consists of putting my arm between my legs and then humping
and thrusting. I have now started opening my eyes and fully accepting
the feelings my body gives me. It's so emotionally satisfying and
strength building! Many, many thanks, Betty.
Dear Betty Dodson:
I am an 85 year old grandmother who enjoys masturbation. I
would lose all my friends if they knew my real feelings! Your book,
Sex for One, tells the truth.
Dear Betty:
Your book Sex for One is incredible! I am in love
with the loving and powerful energy within! I'd love to meet you one
day! Thank you for all your work and passion!
Dear Betty,
Masturbation has given me much pleasure in the past couple
of years, especially after I gave birth to my son, who is 2 1/2 now. I
was so horny and not able to get enough pleasure sexually right after
becoming a mother. I had been masturbating most of my life prior, but
your book, Sex for One, opened up new horizons for me. I'm so
happy I bought it. I must say I've had many wonderful orgasms after
reading your words of wisdom and love.
